This is a rare quarter worth money! Furthermore, no other doubled die quarter listings are available as of yet. Therefore, if you find one like this, hold on to it! These are the types of quarters worth money. Moreover, the secondary images look just like the normal devices on the coin. In other words, a machine doubled coin will be flat instead of raised, as shown in the image below. Most importantly, the spread of the doubling varies and may be very wide or extremely close. Learning the difference can be challenging for new collectors. For this reason, online coin communities and groups are great for getting more than one opinion. Furthermore, examining U. Thank you for visiting my on-line site! The most recent updates to this site were made on February 4, Myself and Tanner Scott have taken over running the website and die files with John Wexler's retirement. In the coming months Tanner and I will post new attribution guidelines on the webpage. It is our goal to keep the Wexler files open for years to come, both posting new varieties and with the eventual goal of already created attributions being entirely online.
Because doubled dies are so popular, there is a lot of information out there about these varieties and they are often seen for sale on internet auction sites such as Ebay. Unfortunately, not all of the information out there is correct. A frequent misconception about doubled dies is that they are produced when coins are struck twice by the dies. This is definitely not the case. All U. Even then, the resulting error coins will NOT be doubled dies. Only proof coins are struck more than once with the number of times that they are struck depending on the alloy of the planchets that will be struck into coins. But even here, the number of times that a proof coin is struck will have no bearing on whether or not a doubled die is produced. The key to doubled dies lies in the name — doubled die! As we have seen, coins are struck by steel rods that bear the design images for the coins that they will be striking.

As someone mentioned in the other thread, if you took a Q-tip to the surfaces of the coin with acetone, they would probably come off. Box , Quakertown, PA Without a listing it is just less informative and quite frankly most of the unlisted coins are really quite minor. A really nice one! I am currently a retired high school mathematics teacher. Copyright Notice: All images are copyright by Ken Potter and may not be used without permission. I sold the rights to my original doubled die and RPM files and also to the books that had been published to that point so that the research on those varieties could continue. I have several in stock. Good luck with your searching! A Top RPM! I believe that the poor quality of these coins makes any die doubling indiscernible. Of course, there are more known now, but still, it is a rarity! While it has a few more dings than the aforementioned MS64 sold by Heritage, its surfaces are much cleaner in that it does not have the preponderance of planchet stains that the Heritage coin had. Once they are gone it is doubtful we will ever be able to offer them again!

Last edited: Oct 18, Naturally, it has been defaced but the entire shank including the serial number, prefixed by an "S" for San Francisco , is undisturbed making it one of the most unusual items you can own. While other controversial Lincoln cents have been alleged by some to be a "D over horizontal D" variety, this one is still the only Lincoln cent positively proven to be so as easily seen in the photo micrographic image supplied in the link above! The cause is most likely due to a tilted die blank seating itself into proper position during the hubbing process -- a condition that has been confirmed as occurring by Mint workers with hands-on experience at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints though officials that sit in front offices with no hands-on experience -- deny it. Extra Rock! As a result, the variety appears the same on all coins struck by the affected die. Large gap in the dates Report this Post to the Staff. Very similar to the "Extra Waterlines Dollar" and nearly as strong on the waterlines, date and other areas described for DDR 1. For example, there are growing numbers of examples where the design for proof coins for a given denomination and year were different from the design for the circulation strike coins of that same denomination and year. By I had enough information on doubled die varieties to publish my first book The Encyclopedia of Doubled Dies, Volume 1. The Unintentional Die Varieties are design variations on coins for a particular denomination and year that were produced in error. Very Rare in any grade! One of only six or seven known! Light on eyelid. Call we may have it.
And it can be paraphrased?
In my opinion you are not right. I am assured. I can defend the position. Write to me in PM, we will communicate.
