White Island, whakaari beach, also known in Maori as Whakaari, is an active volcano situated 49 km off the coast whakaari beach New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region. White Island is easily accessible as tour operators run regular trips to the island from Whakatanein fact it is one of the most accessible active marine volcanos in the world. The resident seal colony can often be seen bounding along the beach, whilst coastal birds dive playfully through the peppercress bushes that line the sand dunes. The scenery at Wharariki Beach easily rivals the recognised wonders of the world, and it is easy to while away a day exploring this wondrous coastal playground.

Twenty-two people died, either in the explosion or from injuries sustained, including two whose bodies were never found and were later declared dead. The north-facing sandy beach is accessible only via a minute walking track from the end of Wharariki Road. The road end is approximately 4 kilometres 2.
