Gerald's Game is a American psychological horror thriller film directed and edited by Mike Flanagan , and screenplay written by Flanagan with Jeff Howard. It is based on Stephen King 's novel of the same title , long thought to be unfilmable. When the husband dies of a sudden heart attack , his wife, left handcuffed to the bed without the key and with little hope of rescue, must find a way to survive, all while battling her inner demons. It received very positive reviews from critics, who lauded Gugino's performance; Flanagan's direction, and the film's themes and their treatment, were also singled out. Jessie and Gerald Burlingame arrive at an isolated lake house in Fairhope, Alabama , for a romantic getaway. They come across a stray dog on the drive over, Jessie wants to help it but Gerald objects. While Gerald takes Viagra , Jessie cuts up a raw steak in the refrigerator and calls out for the dog to eat it. Gerald sees this and chastises her for it as the steak was expensive Kobe beef , but decides to allow her to leave the steak out. They enter the house and Gerald leaves the door open behind them. Inside, she changes into a new slip and Gerald restrains her with a set of handcuffs locked to the bedposts. He begins to enact a stranger rape fantasy ; she half-heartedly plays along but soon becomes uncomfortable, telling him to stop and uncuff her. After a heated argument in which he accuses her of not even trying to rekindle their relationship, Gerald dies of a heart attack , falling on top of Jessie and leaving her trapped in the handcuffs. A few hours pass.

Nobody wins. Movie summary: A couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house. After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free. I honestly have no idea where to start with this review of Gerald's Game , because the movie - and, I assume, the original novel - don't really have a story that allows for a consistent narrative. I've read that many people considered the novel to be unfilmable and this proves them right in a way, but is still enjoyable to watch. And I do want to stress that last part: this movie is a perfectly 'enjoyable' way to spend just over one hundred minutes - in as much as you 'enjoy' horror movies, especially where a victim of abuse suffers through even more torment throughout this story. Much like Cam , there's a gruesome scene at the end which is just as hard to watch as the one in that movie.

For the duration of the film, Jessie is alone in a secluded lake house with basically no hope of rescue, no food, and no phone within reach. What began as a weekend adventure to put the zest back in a stale marriage turns into Jessie being literally chained up for some rape cosplay, then left in her silk slip to waste away as she confronts hallucinations of her bastard husband antagonizing her — while an even stronger manifestation of her subconscious forces her to unpack a childhood trauma that made her susceptible to a scoundrel like Gerald at all. So she willingly degloves herself. Record scratch — what? Yes, that word means what you think it means. Her one blessed reprieve has been a glass of water that Gerald left within reach before dying, and after shattering the glass, she goes through her own Hours moment, cutting a Y incision up her wrist and into her palm, then forcing her hand down through the cuff as the skin peels upward like a latex glove coming off.

Directed by Mike Flanagan. Written in what is considered by many to have been a lull period for the writer, the story is, in a lot of ways, very different from what fans have come to expect from King — playing out like a Hitchcockian thriller, as opposed to an out and out horror. The premise is simple: a couple take a weekend away to resolve their marital issues, only for the husband to have a heart attack while the wife is handcuffed to the bed, leaving her isolated in a cottage in the woods, with only a dog and the body of her dead husband for company. The set-up itself is distressing enough, but what unravels is even more terrifying. Soon, all of her fears began to manifest themselves as she slowly but surely loses her mind over the course of a few days, being forced to face her past and all the horrors it brings. Both movies feature a woman trapped in one location, facing fears that are seemingly inescapable, with no contact with the outside world and the spectre of dangerous men leaning over them.
