It's possible that fans will be divided on this reveal and it will change how they feel about the season in general. However, You still manages to shock four seasons in, which is definitely no small feat given the show's reputation for plot twists and dark storytelling. What episode does so well is give viewers the kind of twist they have been waiting for while still telling a moving story and offering up the character development that You is celebrated for. This feels like it's both obvious and also a shock, which is what makes it so smart. The best thriller series like You have big twists but they have to make sense.
You season 4 episode 8
As this was happening, Nadia was confirming her suspicions about her professor by following clues and using a stolen key to make her way into an old locked bomb shelter … discovering Marienne in a familiar cage in the depths. We see the time where Joe kidnapped Marienne and kept her in his flat for several days, and how she witnessed his obsession for and fixation on Rhys Montrose grow and grow as he watched any interview or podcast he could. Her attempt to convince Joe to let her live go unanswered. Marienne realizes that Joe is going through some kind of dissociative state and that his mental well-being is essentially non-existent. Joe demonstrates that he is slipping between himself and an alternate personality now — the alternate personality being his version of Rhys Montrose. At about the time Joe was invited to Hampsie, he stopped bringing by supplies — leaving Marienne to survive on very little food and water, her body deteriorating now. Until Nadia found her, that is. Rhys says this mental collapse has been brewing quite some time for Joe — ever since he killed Love and abandoned Henry, and the events with Marienne were only the cherry on top. A series of flashbacks showcase that Joe only ever talked to Rhys alone, and that Rhys never spoke to the friend group or interacted with them leading up to now … because he was never really there. Marienne convinces Nadia to leave her in the cage so they can figure out a way to proceed that keeps Juliette safe. Nadia gives Marienne what food and water she has and promises to come back tomorrow. As Joe pities himself internally due to the situation he finds himself in, seeing Kate will always raise his spirits — the person he truly wants to be focusing his attention on. Joe has an appearance to keep up. Rhys remarks that Nadia is going to become trouble for them. Her reaction to him touching her shoulder lightly is incredibly telling — she knows something.
Joe has an appearance to keep up. Most of this episode is just Marienne being tormented, and I will not linger on it here.

The voiceover this time belongs to Marienne, who will describe her situation in the allegorical fairy tale language she would use to explain something to her very young child. Also, unfortunately, this episode treats us to a bad You special: watching a woman get tortured and go insane for what feels like forever, for sort of no reason, because we could glean all the information we needed about this in a much more concise and less gratuitous fashion. With the help of Hallucination Rhys, Joe pieces together what he actually did to Marienne: put a sedative in her coffee when she was about to get on the train, then kidnap her. Apparently, Joe became fixated on Rhys shortly after arriving in London. Shadow Joe tells Marienne he wants to give their relationship another chance.
Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers from You Season 4, Episode 8. Welp, it happened. Well, technically he was a real person, but the Rhys that had been talking to Joe this whole time was nothing more than a dark projection of his fractured mind. It was the boldest twist You had ever attempted, but although the show tried its best to explain away all the inconsistencies the big reveal created, a few plot holes remained. Imaginary Rhys pointed out that he and Joe only spoke one-on-one, and he never interacted with anyone else. Like, if Joe was just talking to himself repeatedly in front of the Sundry House crew, why did none of them ever point out how weird that would be? Imaginary Rhys tried his best to make some sense out of Joe locking himself up in a basement and then setting it on fire, but it just felt like a reach. While the twist may have been obvious enough for fans to figure it out early on, it still had a few kinks in it to throw people off the scent.
