Access includes a steep stone stairway down to Whipsiderry Beach, a place full of natural features and a lot quieter than the other more crowded beaches of Newquay. The walk is mainly along the beach at low tide, at the foot of the dramatic cliffs. Note: the walk should only be attempted 2 hours either side of low tide. Always check the Newquay tide tables first, and preferably set out on an outgoing tide. Return the same way. What better way to finish the day after your surf lesson than on the beach, watching the sunset and eating amazing food.

Why do people visit Watergate Bay : the beach, the surf or the food? Undoubtedly, all three. The lighting is rather special, including some perfectly dimmed old fashioned light bulbs creating an air of warmth and comfort. Very fresh warm bread, whipped Cornish of course butter and a recommended bottle of cold Viognier were already at hand, along with staff to pour it for us, as course number one arrived: crispy scallops for me and octopus for my partner. Anything different about these scallops — yes, they were different, more like cured Italian ham as they were so sweet — entwined with a dressed light salad. The octopus most likely pota , was served with chorizo and spicy beans, it was deep, smokey and comforting — a long way from a tapas version. Our next course was Fiorentina steak. For dessert I went for a rhubarb fool while my co-eater braved the chocolate fondant. The fool was lots of fun and lighter than expected, the rhubarb was a real star too, perfect. The fondant had a deep, soft and chewy crust with an oozing centre, just as it should be.

We can't recommend trying Zacry's enough, the restaurant, perched on the sea wall at Watergate Bay Hotel, was everything we'd hoped for. We have more newsletters. There is a new relaxed fine dining restaurant with some of the most glorious sea views in Cornwall - we've tried it, and we can safely say it's amazing. We were invited to come and stay one night in one of the Beach Loft rooms at the Watergate Bay Hotel and enjoy an evening meal for two at the revamped Zacry's restaurant, and it proved a real treat. For the Watergate Bay Hotel connoisseurs and regulars, Zacry's used to be the main family-friendly restaurant within the hotel that overlooks the popular surfing beach north of Newquay. However, when in September top chef Emily Scott decided not to extend her lease after three years of running her own restaurant, Watergate Bay Hotel's executive chef Neil Haydock convinced the leadership team to take over the space with Zacry's and transform it into a new elegant, fine dining experience without any of the pomp and pretence of a London big name restaurant. The capital may boast all the fancy restaurants you can imagine, but they'll never be able to compete with what Zacry's offers, one of the most stunning ocean views in Cornwall.
