Zainab Johnson is an American comedian and actress. Johnson is a series regular on Amazon's Upload. Johnson was born and raised in Harlem , New York, one of thirteen children of a devout Muslim family. Johnson later moved to Los Angeles to become an actress. She was named to Variety ' s 10 Comics to Watch for

After moving to Los Angeles from New York to act, she struggled to get a job. While shopping on Net-a-Porter one day, she got a call from a friend who produced comedy shows. The person needed someone to fill in for their assistant who was just fired. Those two days turned into six months and she found herself always in the company of comedians at comedy clubs. She also began to notice that as she booked the show for six months, very few of the feature acts were women. There was not very many women. I went to one close to my house, because if I bombed I knew I could just sneak back into my apartment, and nobody needed to know about it. I think regardless of what they think that you are going to talk about, they don't think you're going to be funny. I think that is the biggest expectation, or lack thereof, that you are not going to be able to entertain them adequately.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Harlem with her 12 siblings, she was neither the family jokester nor the class clown. When Johnson tells me about the trip that became the first of many steps leading to a career in comedy, it was as if she was always destined to be on the stage. The day we talk in Manhattan, Johnson wears wide-legged jeans, a sheer lemon-colored tank top, and pointed heels. Her father joined the Nation of Islam while in the Navy during the Civil Rights era, when many Black people were in search of a new spiritual identity to combat the racism they experienced in America. But she faced discrimination and bullying, as well. As a child who wore a khimar, a headscarf covering her head, neck, and shoulders, she was constantly asked questions about her hair, ranging from its texture to its very existence. When she was in second and third grade, she recalls, she got her khimar pulled off her head. Then there were the twin struggles of not seeing positive representations of herself in popular media and watching her friends get all the dating attention. She finally stopped wearing her hijab for good to play basketball. Nobody ever made me feel good about it.

Johnson stood on a box looking into a mirror during a recent photo shoot, alternating between serious vogue looks, smiling and posing just so — she truly looks like a model — with praise from her team as they looked on. Her reflection gave the optical illusion that her face was one of the famous stand-up comics the club proudly endorsed like George Carlin, Jay Leno, Sarah Silverman and Chris Rock.
