Zuko and mai

For fans of Avatar: The Last Airbenderthe relationships between the characters are central to the series, zuko and mai. While the world-building and adventure are also fantastic, seeing how these different characters interact with one another is also compelling.

This will be my very first post on Tumblr. Just judging by the way she was introduced to the story and her first in-show interaction with Zuko, I am going to argue that the decision to make her the endgame lover of Zuko was something that was decided very late. When we first encounter Mai, she is depicted as amoral, and pretty unemotional. They do NOT know at this point that Zuko will be pardoned and allowed to come back. If this was intended to be a couple we are supposed to root for, the story has a very strange way of showing that.

Zuko and mai

The daughter of a powerful government official, Mai has known and loved Zuko all her life. Both received similar upbringings, where callousness and cruelty were often rewarded. At the start of Book 3, Mai and Zuko are already dating. Apropos of what seemed to be a one-sided crush, fans were either delighted or confused. Those not privy to additional content were missing an important piece of the puzzle. Noting his anguish over betraying Uncle Iroh, the sadistic Azula uses an unknowing Mai to tip the scales in her favor. Believing that a rekindled childhood flame will anchor her brother to the Homeland, Azula prepares a date for the two of them. The date is loaded with romantic cliches — likely curtesy of Ty Lee — features an annoying musician and ultimately goes pretty poorly. Attempting to keep up the ruse and avoid further embarrassment, Zuko tells Jin that Mai is an old friend, and a very skilled knife thrower. This mirrors a childhood incident that brought them closer together, though no one ends up soaked this time — until Mai insists that Jin give it a try. After Zuko is pulled from the fountain, the two discuss old times, as well as their old and new feelings for each other and share a kiss.

However, Mai's loyalty to Zuko leads her to betray Azula.

Mai was the daughter and eldest child of Ukano , the former governor of New Ozai , and his wife, Michi. During the last year of the Hundred Year War , she became one of Princess Azula 's main allies, and therefore one of Team Avatar 's greatest foes, as well as Prince Zuko 's love interest once he returned to the Fire Nation. Mai was exceptionally proficient at throwing stilettos , a self-taught skill she developed out of boredom. Using small knives and spring-loaded stiletto holsters concealed in her robes, she was capable of besting numerous benders at once, despite not being a bender herself. She was recruited by Azula along with Ty Lee to capture the princess' brother and uncle , as well as the Avatar and his friends.

This page is comprised of Zuko's relationships with other characters in the world of Avatar. A frequently troubled young man, Zuko acquired both friends and foes throughout his journeys. Azula was Zuko's younger sister by two years. Azula also enjoyed calling him by disliked nicknames, including "Zuzu" and "Dum-Dum", [6] and reminding him of his inferiority in their father's eyes. As evidenced by Zuko's dreams, Azula had a great deal of influence over him, arguably rivaling his uncle's.

Avatar: The Last Airbender 's brooding Prince Zuko becomes the Fire Lord at the end of the series, but he lived a long life after that and returned in sequel series The Legend of Korra as an old man with his own dragon mount. A series of comics that pick up after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender 's series finale, "Sozin's Comet," detail the early days of Zuko's rule as Fire Lord, his search for his mother, and his continued conflict with his sister, Azula. Though Aang is the protagonist of Avatar: The Last Airbender , Zuko's character arc has been the most highly-praised among fans and critics. The son of the cruel warmonger Fire Lord Ozai, Zuko was left permanently scarred after his father punished his refusal to take part in an agni kai firebender duel by burning his face. Zuko was then further punished by being exiled from the Fire Nation until he returned with the Avatar - a seemingly impossible task, since the Avatar had been missing for a century by that point. At the start of the series, Zuko is an antagonist who is fixated on capturing the Avatar at any cost. However, over the course of Avatar: The Last Airbender 's three seasons he goes through a painful redemption arc that ultimately leaves him fighting against his father on Team Avatar. In the four-part series finale, Zuko's sister is defeated in battle and he takes her place as the new Fire Lord - leaving him with the difficult task of figuring out how to lead the Fire Nation in the wake of the Hundred Year War. Not long after Zuko and Aang reconciled their differences and became allies in the final season of Avatar: The Last Airbender , they almost became enemies all over again.

Upon returning to her room in the flower shop, Mai took a painting of Zuko and her as couple, and put it into a drawer, seemingly trying to get over their relationship. As a result of this betrayal, Azula imprisoned her, along with Ty Lee, who stopped Azula's attack by blocking her chi. The society members moved to apprehend her, but they were no match for Mai, who swiftly dealt with them. However, after Zuko revealed that he was mad at himself at a bonfire on the beach, they got back together. There's still a chance they could have ended up together, but the creators haven't said for sure. Shippers appreciate the subtle "opposites attract" nature of the ship- with Zuko running hot and Mai running cold- yet also being "birds of a feather" with their common background. Mai was also Prince Zuko's love interest upon his return to the Fire Nation.
