Porsche's legend started right here, with this car. This Porsche A Speedster is out of the automaker's personal museum collection, and they foolishly and magnanimously let Roadshow drive it. The might have its roots in VW's humble Beetle, but it feels totally different and altogether more special. We drove it as part of a Porsche Heritage event in Hawaii, where this was just one of five generations of Porsche convertible models that we could sample. Our editor didn't expect to bond the most with the Speedster, but it's the one that he most wanted to take home at the end of the trip. The opportunity to compare today's latest-and-greatest Porsches with their historical predecessors was a rare treat. There's a reason the is an icon, and not just because it's the first chapter in the book of Porsche.

Despite looking outwardly similar to the preceding models, Porsche thoroughly updated their line in and called their new model the A. At the core, this included a larger cc engine, but also a curved-glass windshield and a thoroughly revised suspension. These were updated to better suit the improved gasoline and tire technologies of the period. With the A came a larger cc engine that had higher compression to take advantage of the available higher octane fuels. Extensive testing by the experimental department known as Versuchsabteilung resulted in numerous suspension and drive line mounting changes before the final A specification was decided. They softened the springs by removing leaves from the torsion cars and fitted stiffer dampers. This was done to take advantage of a more modern tire technology which allowed for a smaller-diameter inch tire and a wider tread with reduced air pressures. From the outside, the A kept to the Porsche mantra of stepwise evolution. The new model was outwardly identical to the previous version except for the wider tires, a small rub-strip below the doors, a fully-curved front window and enamel paint replacing lacquer previously used. Inside, Porsche fitted an all-new, flat-face dashboard that was sculpted around the new curved windshield.

In model year , the was replaced by the comprehensively enhanced A. As from its market launch, this type was available with five four-cylinder engines:. The modifications to the vehicle were part of "Technical Programme 1" T1. One of the key visual differences between the A series and the original was a single-piece, curved panoramic windscreen. The front indicators were always integrated in the horn grille and all models had a modified front lid handle with inset Porsche Crest. The models were discontinued in model year T2. The tailpipes of the models ended between the bumper guards to give more ground clearance.
A classic example of how being wrong can be oh-so-right. There's a common axiom among car journalists: Don't drive your heroes. It's a riff on the more universal sentiment, "don't meet your heroes," the idea being that whatever personal idolatry you've fostered in your mind about someone or something can't possibly be lived up to in real life. But what if the hero in question isn't yours, it's someone else's? That's what came to mind as I slipped into the tiny, leather-covered bucket seat of this Porsche A Speedster. This elemental, upturned bathtub of a sports car is an icon among icons, and not just because it's the genesis of Porsche as a brand. And yet, as I clicked its driver's door home for the first time, I admit I had more respect than love for the Porsche's rear-engine, air-cooled is about as uncomplicated as cars get -- then or now. I've always admired the simplicity of its form and appreciated its lineage, but I've historically fallen somewhat short of veneration for this German standard bearer. It's older than the cars I grew up coveting, and for whatever reason, I tend to be less interested in models that are routinely knocked off by the replicar industry.
