RuNet Echo talks to a Russian activist about his campaign to make public the private life of a prison official accused of ordering torture against inmates. This ninth and final entry takes the tools and instructions we've been studying and applies them to a single case study: last year's wildfires in the Siberian city of Chita. The international journalist community reacted with consternation and anger to a leaked database of reporters accredited with the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" published by Ukrainian activists. There are numerous free and open information portals and databases available for researching individuals in Ukraine and Russia, whether you are investigating a public figure or a private individual. In court records, the FBI said, somewhat vaguely, that it found Teixeira through social media. Bizarrely, he said, the documents were posted in Discord channels focused on the Minecraft computer game and a Filipino YouTube celebrity. Toler traced the original source of the documents back even further, to a Discord server called Thug Shaker Central. But this was a vexing and very competitive target and, you know, we just thought, Why not? Thus began the wild chase for the leaker. One of those screenshots showed a different handle he had used, J. Social media accounts led them to Teixeira, and importantly, to a picture of him in a military uniform in the kitchen of his childhood home. The countertops in that photo matched the surface the leaked documents had been photographed on.

In the days since nine people including the gunman were shot and killed at a mall in Allen, Texas, investigators and journalists have been looking to trace the online footprint of the shooter, named by authorities as year-old Mauricio Garcia. The United States has a long and troubling history of mass shootings, with many of those who carry out such attacks leaving a trail of digital evidence. This case appears to be no different. The account also espoused far-right viewpoints and contained pictures of Garcia showing off at least two Nazi tattoos.

And we've found a few new people, things of this New York times investigation that just came out a couple of weeks ago, a few new people to stock online to figure out what they're doing. And we did and we searched and searched and searched and looked for airline tickets and all this other stuff in these databases. Of course, you have traditional journalism, New York times, whatever, who will talk to people on the ground, from people who say that it did or didn't happen, or whatever.
