Ex-government agent and one of the FBI's Most Wanted fugitives, Raymond "Red" Reddington James Spader mysteriously turns himself in to the FBI and offers to give up everyone he has ever worked with including a long-thought-dead terrorist but under one condition - he'll only talk to newly-minted female FBI profiler, Elizabeth Keen Megan Boone with whom he seemingly has no connection. For Liz, it's going to be one hell of a first day on the job and what follows is a twisting series of events as the race to stop a terrorist begins.

Right, so the story of how and when and why Raymond Reddington met Elizabeth Keen has always been a difficult puzzle to piece together. There are loose ends, and questions answered with more questions, and things that seem all-important during a season could become completely obsolete with the transition from spring finale to winter premiere. Remember the Fulcrum? Remember the Warrior Gene? Remember the Cabal??? All those rabbits chased were of huge importance at one point or another, and then they kind of disappeared into the ether to make room for other, more urgent storylines. But it was important that we paid attention to all of it because eventually, some of it might be relevant again, no matter how deeply in our memories it was buried. Reader, I grinned throughout the entire thing. The episode opens on masked gunmen swarming a bank, only to find one of their should-be hostages refusing to get on the ground. And Red is not at all impressed with their gun-jumping, which includes terrifying a little girl. In the time they take to register the police sirens outside, it goes up to 55 percent. With that deal made, they head through a tunnel in the wall , through a pub, and into a waiting garbage truck. The safe deposit box goes up front with Red and Dembe, and the cash goes in back with the bank robbers. And when a bump releases the back hatch, dumping cash into the wind, Red goes ahead and hits a lever to dump the robbers out, as well. No one has ever called Raymond Reddington a team player….

It first aired on September 23, on NBC. He announces his name is Raymond Reddington , and while the security personnel runs his name, he gains attention as he goes through the odd process of removing his coat, jacket and hat. An alarm is triggered and Reddington immediately, goes into submission and with the alarms ringing, he kneels down on the Federal Seal on the floor, with his hands behind his head and waits. He is instantly surrounded by armed security, guns aimed and at highest alert. The camera focuses in on the Fugitive List where he is featured. Things happen quickly once this takes place and it we jump to a scene with Cooper arriving meeting with Agent Donald Ressler. Cooper asks if it's really Reddington as they make their way into a facility.

Reddington surrenders to the FBI and offers to identify and help capture the criminals he has worked with, whom he calls "The Blacklist", but only if he is allowed to work with Liz Keen, a rookie profiler at the FBI. He refuses to explain why Liz must be involved. The Reddington Task Force, led by Assistant Director Harold Cooper Harry Lennix , becomes the lead law enforcement agency responsible for capturing or killing the members of the Blacklist at Reddington's behest usually to Red's benefit , which causes conflicts, particularly for Special Agent Donald Ressler Diego Klattenhoff , who was originally tasked with capturing Reddington. A major subplot for the season is Elizabeth Keen's discovery that her husband Tom Keen Ryan Eggold , a schoolteacher to all appearances, is actually a covert operative with an unknown agenda and Liz's efforts to discover who he actually is and who sent him. A second subplot involves the Cabal, a shadowy multinational group that holds positions of influence in government and business, and their interest in Reddington's activities. The Cabal is usually represented by Alan Fitch Alan Alda , the Deputy Director of National Intelligence, who tries to maintain a civil relationship with Reddington despite the Cabal's misgivings while trying to determine what Reddington actually knows.

I also was not terribly excited about the acting of Megan Boone. Donald Ressler begins briefing fellow agents on Reddington, and we learn he was a former military man being set up to be admiral.
