In this narrative-driven, third-person survival horror game set years in the future, you take on the role of Jacob Lee — a victim of fate thrown into Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary located on Jupiter's moon, Callisto. When inmates begin to transform into monstrous creatures, the prison is thrown into chaos. To survive, you must battle your way to safety and escape while uncovering the dark and disturbing secrets behind the outbreak. Using a unique blend of shooting and close-quarters combat, you must adapt your tactics to fight the rapidly evolving creatures while scavenging to unlock new weapons, gear, and abilities to outrun the growing threat and escape the horrors of Jupiter's dead moon.

Earlier this year we gave PlayStation fans a world-exclusive first look at The Callisto Protocol, a new science-fiction survival horror game from the team at Striking Distance Studios. The response from the PlayStation community has been incredible. Fans have told us that they love the oppressive atmosphere, the terrifying creatures, and isolated deep space setting. It has inspired the team as we polish the game for release in December. But the community has also had a lot of questions — especially about the combat and gameplay. Delivering an innovative new strategic combat system for The Callisto Protocol has been a huge focus for the team. Action in a survival horror game should be a delicate dance between feelings of desperate helplessness and strategic, skill-based gameplay.

It merges classic Resident Evil -style survival horror with the production values of a next-gen game to create something truly terrifying — I sincerely dreaded having to slowly make my way through the crumbling space prison where the game is set, knowing that some new horror awaited me. Unfortunately, that sense of terror was eventually replaced by frustration, as the game became plagued with jarring difficulty spikes that completely destroyed the tension. After around 10 hours, I made it to what I believe is the final boss that might be wishful thinking, but it sure felt like it , only to spend another few hours fruitlessly trying to defeat it. There are only so many times you can watch the main character get ripped in half before you need a nice, long break. Early on, though, I was very much enjoying my time with the game. At one point, the game was actually set in the PUBG universe in an ill-fated attempt at brand synergy. It takes place in a maximum security prison on Callisto, a supposedly dead moon of Jupiter, and you play as Jacob, a freelance delivery man who takes a bad job and ends up locked inside. Almost immediately, things go wrong when a virus starts turning the inmates into zombie-like creatures.
