Yellowknife sits on the North shore of Great Slave Lake and is the hub for much of the territory. It is on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake , about km mi south of the Arctic Circle , on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife and its surrounding water bodies were named after a local Dene tribe, who were known as the "Copper Indians" or "Yellowknife Indians", today incorporated as the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. They traded tools made from copper deposits near the Arctic Coast. Its population, which is ethnically mixed, was 20, per the Canadian Census. The Yellowknife settlement is considered to have been founded in , [2] after gold was found in the area, although commercial activity in the present-day waterfront area did not begin until Yellowknife quickly became the centre of economic activity in the NWT, and was named the capital of the Northwest Territories in As gold production began to wane, Yellowknife shifted from being a mining town to a centre of government services in the s. However, with the discovery of diamonds north of the city in , [14] this shift began to reverse. In recent years, tourism, transportation, and communications have also emerged as significant Yellowknife industries. The area around the community is the historic and traditional home of the Yellowknives Dene, the land's First Nations residents. Dettah was the first formal settlement in the area, which was founded by the Yellowknives in the s and located on a point of land on the east side of Yellowknife Bay. The current municipal area of Yellowknife was first occupied by prospectors who ventured into the region in the mids. A Klondike -bound prospector, E. Blakeney, made the first discovery of gold in the Yellowknife Bay area in The discovery was viewed as unimportant in those days because of the Klondike Gold Rush and because Great Slave Lake was too far away to attract attention.

Founded in , the city is located in the traditional territory of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation who founded the nearby community of Dettah in the early s. The city of Yellowknife has its origins in gold mining and was designated as territorial capital in Since then the city has grown to around 20, residents and has become a cultural, economic and government services hub for the territory. Diamonds were discovered in the area in , and with the founding of three operating diamond mines within short flights of Yellowknife, the city is once again getting in touch with its mining roots. Tourism, transportation, and communications are other significant Yellowknife industries. The Government of the Northwest Territories has released public information regarding arsenic in the environment around Yellowknife as a result of past mining activities.
