This unit is known in the University by the familiar term, "semester credit hour," and is the primary academic measure by which progress toward a degree is gauged. It is recognized that such a unit measures only a part, albeit a major part, of a composite learning experience, based upon formally structured and informal interactions among faculty and students. The semester credit hour is usually based on the number of classroom hours per week throughout a term. The Carnegie Unit defines a semester unit of credit as equal to a minimum of three 3 hours of work per week for a semester a minimum of 50 minutes of seat time per week for a semester [every 60 minutes of instruction with 10 minutes break]. Most lecture and seminar courses are awarded three 3 credit hours. Over an entire semester, this formula represents at least 45 hours of class time and 90 hours of student preparation. Laboratory One 1 laboratory credit hour represents three 3 hour per week of lecture or discussion time plus hours per week of scheduled supervised laboratory work, and two 2 hours of student preparation time. Laboratory courses are offered a supplement to another course component such as a lecture.
