In Darth Plagueis , those questions are finally answered. For fans interested in learning more about the Sith and their intricate Grand Plan to bring down the Republic and the Jedi, Darth Plagueis adds some intriguing and disturbing depth to the backstory of the Prequel Trilogy. The front cover art sets the tone for the book: a younger Palpatine kneeling in subservience to the looming visage of an alien. Unlike the movies, or the Expanded Universe books and comics before now, this is not a tale of Darth Sidious as puppetmaster pulling the strings of galactic events or terrifying autocrat. Instead, we see the first real glimpses of Palpatine as a pupil or cautious low-level politician — someone who is even, on occasion, vulnerable.

Written by James Luceno, Darth Plagueis was first published in after years of delays. He has his mind set on manipulating midi-chlorians to do his bidding, with the ultimate aim of creating new life out of nothing. Even an unknown Sith acolyte sent by his former Master becomes the subject of years of experimentation. As the years pass, Plagueis and Palpatine become quite the duo as the galaxy moves closer and closer to war. Ultimately, we know what becomes of Palpatine, but the novel plays out in a way that makes his rise to power much more interesting and rich. The legend of Darth Plagueis and his ultimate demise is revealed, and the true Master of the Sith rises. Darth Plagueis is a very enjoyable book for a number of reasons. First is the writing talents of James Luceno. His style demands attention and thought but is not overly complicated or difficult to keep up with. Second, Darth Plagueis fills in a story gap that is just so satisfying from a fan perspective. Getting to dive into the history of not one but two of the most powerful Sith in the galaxy was just so much fun. This is why I enjoy books so much, we really get to spend quality time with these characters, learning why they are who they are and what has influenced them. Luceno also weaves in characters and plot points of The Phantom Menace in very satisfying ways, something that I was not anticipating to happen baby Darth Maul! Darth Plagueis officially has the Legends stamp on it but until the Lucasfilm story team replaces it with something else, this novel is firmly planted in my Star Wars brain canon. With amazing new cover art by Malaysian artist Qistina Khalidah, this new paperback edition deserves a spot on your bookshelf, so pick up a copy today!
This article is about the book. Just as it is no surprise that Luceno, once again, succeeds, darth plagueis book. There's lots of nods to greater Star Wars lure especially from the prequels and it make you appreciate Palpatine who is already a very strong and good character in the movies alone even more.

Star Wars has undergone many changes since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in The Expanded Universe soldiered on for over thirty years and was the only source of new Star Wars content until when The Phantom Menace premiered. These novels, comic books, and video games developed a rabid fanbase, one that, to this day, feels like its content is worthwhile. Lucasfilm de-canonized a lot of stories to create a new canon. This was a prudent move - no one could expect casual Star Wars fans to experience all the post- Return Of The Jedi content to understand what was happening. Lucasfilm has used many concepts and ideas from Legends, but they could easily go further. There are plenty of great Star Wars stories that aren't canon but easily could be canonized, introducing a whole new audience to their brilliance. The point was to flesh out the Clone Wars before the next movie, and it contained novels, comics, video games, and Star Wars: Clone Wars , a "micro-series" of animated shorts from Genddy Tartakovsky. There are a lot of great stories from this period, but the best of the bunch was easily Shatterpoint by Matthew Stover. Jedi Master Depa Bilaba was sent to the planet to help the natives, who had powerful Force traditions, fight off the Separatists.

And I suspect they never will. Darth Plagueis is probably worth reading simply if for no other reason other than how "canon" it is, if you're a big Star Wars fan. More by the Author. Some of those books such as DMSH will have the ending spoiled in the course of this novel; other books such as CoD are alluded to so tenuously, that I, who had fairly recently reread the book, had trouble remembering important plot elements. Don't have an account? Spoiler Warning. This book is mostly about Palpatine's rise to Dark Lord of the Sith. And with the help of new friends like Kinman Doriana and Sate Pestage , Palpatine arranges for the successful assassination of his former mentor and Naboo's representative Senator to the Republic, Vidar Kim. But Luceno doesn't get rid of all his quirks; read this with a dictionary nearby so you can define such SAT vocab words as: presaged ineluctable moribund scabrous bilious cognomen calumny And now, time for your favorite section and mine Loading interface
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, getting into "Star Wars" was a relatively simple thing. You watched the original trilogy, and eventually, you watched the prequel trilogy. After that, you could dabble a bit in some comics or the odd novel, maybe play some "Battlefront II" watch those wrist rockets, everybody , but you didn't need to dive in too deep in order to get a full picture.
It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. This article's plot summary is in need of attention. This is boring though — the story lacks excitement with the outcome so assured. Definitely in the top 3 of Star Wars novels. Now those who follow these things know that's not totally true. As the novel comes to a close during the events of The Phantom Menace , Sidious and Plagueis learn that a young boy named Anakin Skywalker , a former slave found by Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine , had been born of the Force. So Disney, is this still canon? But rather than follow simple logic, the book engages in making everything convoluted and interconnected, I guess to try and make Plagueis look like a master of his craft. Darth Plagueis sees the Sith partnership taking over the galaxy--Palpatine controlling the masses and Plagueis controlling the Force. This book goes back and provides the background information to Revenge of the Sith obviously, however it uses info from Darth Maul books and comic series, a brief mention of Jungo Fett's comic series, and even season 3 of Clone Wars to be resolved in season 4. But everything's perfectly all right now. When this is at its best it is an exploration of the similarities and distinctions between Jedi and Sith. Sean Barrs.
