Magic Story: Return to Dominaria is finally over, and after such a long road I'm sad to see the story move on. The loss of Dominaria's small set meant abbreviating the story, and one can't help but wonder what might have been with that extra story space, and what plot lines had to be cut in order to streamline the narrative. Regardless, Martha Wells has done an amazing job on Dominaria, using the space she was given to focus on great characterization and why we should care what happens to the Gatewatch or the crew of the Weatherlight. To end the growing threat of the Cabal.

Karn and Squee represent the original Weatherlight crew, and there are descendants of other famous characters like Captain Sisay and Gerrard. This gives the setting a sense of history and makes it a very nostalgic place for long-time fans. Karn the silver golem has come to Dominaria seeking an ancient artifact known as the Sylex that was once used by Urza to destroy the Phyrexians. The leonin planeswalker Ajani rescues Karn after he's imprisoned in a cave-in by Phyrexians. Jodah, the Unifier Illustration by Ryan Pancoast. Jodah is an immortal archmage on Dominaria who appears at the same time as Jaya to help with peace negotiations.

Home to a rich variety of terrain—cold mountains, wide plains, jungles, deserts, islands—this plane boasts countless historic locations, from the volcanic continent of Shiv to the time-shattered isle of Tolaria to the wretched island of Urborg. It's also the birthplace of brothers Urza and Mishra, master artificers who discovered ancient stones of power in the Caves of Koilos. In their lust for power, the brothers waged a savage war against each other, devastating Dominaria and plunging the plane into an ice age. At the end of this war, Urza discovered the dark plane of Phyrexia, a hell of flesh, metal, and grease, where the line between living and artificial was blurred. Phyrexia nearly invaded Dominaria, were it not for the skyship Weatherlight and its crew. The famous flying vessel contained ancient magical technology that enabled the ship to planeswalk. The Weatherlight, its crew of heroes, and a collection of artifacts called the Legacy including the Planeswalker, Karn were all instrumental in thwarting the invasion. Dominaria was also the epicenter of the temporal-planar fractures that threatened all the planes. A host of cataclysms, many caused by Planeswalkers, left Dominaria desolated, destabilizing the fabric of the Multiverse. The damage to time and space spread outward from Dominaria and started affecting other planes.
