That said, gathering intel on new releases, and deciphering how to actually obtain one have added some unwelcome drama to my experience of the brand. On the bright side, that makes finding and halios watches one all the more rewarding.
Despite my eager and bleary-eyed attendance at both SIHH and Baselworld this past year, the release of the Halios Seaforth has nevertheless become a highlight of my horological calendar. Halios, a darling of the now-maturing internet micro-brand dive watch scene, launched the Seaforth this past July in a mix-n-match format, offering multiple dials and bezel options to maximize appeal for the widest possible audience. From black dials and black sapphire bezel inserts to pastel blue dials and fixed sterile bezels, the handful of options makes for a wide range of possible Seaforth expressions. Halios is based in Vancouver, Canada, and is a one-man business fueled by the dive watch passion of one Jason Lim. Over the better part of the last decade, Lim has successfully grown Halios into a stable and well-loved producer of a respectable lineage of sport watches, from the early Holotype, to the Laguna, the Tropik, and now the Seaforth, to name only a few. Production runs are small and while Halios may eventually produce additional examples of a given model, they typically do so with tweaked designs and new dial options.

Just like the explosion of TV programming meant more incredible shows than ever, the rapid growth of the microbrand segment has meant more amazing watches than ever. But if you believe in heaven, you have to believe in hell, and with a plethora of good watches comes a plethora of bad watches. All from the comfort his or her own home, a would-be brand founder can hire a designer to translate a design to CAD renderings, contract with manufacturers to produce the watch, and use a crowdfunding platform to reach an international customer base and finance the bulk of the costs. Add to that the increasing capabilities of manufacturers and increasing availability of higher quality components, and a surfeit of exceptional affordable timepieces seems inevitable. It was in this environment that the original microbrands emerged. Among those OG micros and among the fewer that still remain was Halios , a Vancouver-based brand founded in by Jason Lim. As the Rolex Submariner, and the Omega Speedmaster, and the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso are in the mainstream watch community, the Halios Seaforth is a watch that almost everyone with even a passing interest in microbrand watches has heard of and in one way or another reveres. Now in its fourth generation, the Seaforth continues to maintain its status as an icon. The Halios Seaforth IV introduces a handful of subtle refinements and significant improvements. While stainless steel remains an option, the Seaforth IV is the first generation to be offered in titanium. The watch is just
Thank you, kind soul.
My horological adolescent foundations were laid on principles around clicks in a unidirectional plain and a waterproof competence that laughed in the face of water enriched environments. Perhaps I have to credit Worn and Wound for the introduction my failing memory suggests this is most likely but the chatter spoke of universal positive feedback from the Canadian outfit and a watch greater than the sum of its individual, brushed steel parts. Now I imagine most of you will not know the history here. I had come to the party late and my only hope to secure my precious was the wonders of eBay. Into my clutches appeared my first Seaforth. It was in great condition apart from a fairly deep scratch between the lugs where the previous owner had clearly been practising his formative skills in strap changing. The chase complete … a 41mm steel, sunray blue dial with a hour bezel … an inherent beauty that, to this day provides an aesthetic glow.
After the first series of the original Seaforth sold out and then the subsequent offerings proved to be so popular that Halios's site was unable to survive the ordering process, the three-handers are in production and ordering for the Seaforth GMT starts today. Many of the specifics are identical to the original Seaforth which I bought, and also reviewed here and it is essentially the same Seaforth you know and love but rocking an ETA automatic with a "caller GMT" independent hour display. Local jumping GMTs are generally the most flexible for actual travel as you can jump set the hour of the local time zone without stopping the watch. In contrast, independent hour GMTs are great for tracking another time zone or two from afar. This is very handy for those of us that have to call or judge response times on messages sent to distant places. The Seaforth GMT's independent hour hand is updated via the first position on the crown and jumps forward without affecting the date display.

Bold lines and an original design aesthetic clearly set it apart from countless competitors and offer a lot of reasons to like this unusual watch. Luckily though, like all great watches, it has a catchy nickname: The Puck. There are many things to like about this watch, but foremost for me is the bold and original design aesthetic, which sets it clearly apart from countless competitors. The first thing you notice when looking at The Puck is its distinctive case.

While collectors and would-be buyers may experience some frustration in the process, you can rest assured that the watches themselves live up to the vision set forth by Jason, without compromise. Read on. The side profile carries through from lug tip to lug tip in a svelte single motion, while the undercarriage tucks in underneath. Please also take a look at our video to get a good impression of the watch and don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. The square lume containers get a polished bevel toward the center of the dial, but there is no back wall to close them off. It quietly resonates personality, like Ryan Gosling, without loudly pretending to have it—like James Corden. Sure, you could call it that, it has a meter depth rating, a bezel that rotates, and even big blocky hour indices, but a closer look reveals a watch with more universal aspirations. View All Brands. It was a watch I struggled to sell emotionally not physically — it went in minutes but it eventually went via eBay. Side note: ATA, or Atmospheres Absolute, is different than the usual ATM label we see, representing the total ambient pressure on the system being measured. Just like the explosion of TV programming meant more incredible shows than ever, the rapid growth of the microbrand segment has meant more amazing watches than ever. Both of the included leather straps are easy wearing and pleasantly chunky, replete with a steel buckle that is signed on the inner flank. So, what are the raw ingredients to this extra special Seaforth? The grip is precise and easy to use, offering a progressive and smooth action with a strong, if tinny, click and no wiggle between each position. What will Halios follow the Seaforth with?
