The film was directed by Chris Wedge in his feature directorial debut and co-directed by Carlos Saldanha from a screenplay by Michael Berg , Michael J. Wilson , and Peter Ackerman , based on a story by Wilson. Set during the days of the Pleistocene ice age , the film centers around three main characters—Manny Romano , a no-nonsense woolly mammoth ; Sid Leguizamo , a loudmouthed ground sloth ; and Diego Leary , a sardonic saber-toothed tiger —who come across a human baby and work together to return it to its tribe. Additionally, the film occasionally follows Scrat , a speechless "saber-toothed squirrel" Wedge , who is perpetually searching for a place in the ground to bury his acorn. Ice Age was originally intended as a 2D animated film developed by Fox Animation Studios , but eventually became the first full-length animated film for the newly reformed Blue Sky, which had been reshaped from a VFX house to a computer animation studio. Focus shifted from making an action-adventure drama film to a more comedy-oriented one, and several writers, such as Berg and Ackerman, were brought on to bring out a wittier tone. It follows a group of mammals living in the ice age in prehistoric times. Originally just Sid the sloth, Manny the mammoth, and Diego the saber-toothed cat, later films add more characters to their "herd". There is also Scrat the saber-toothed squirrel, who has his own misadventures relating to his acorn. It follows the three main characters from the first film as they learn that their valley will be flooded by a massive dam when the ice melts. On the way to a safer place, they come across a female mammoth named Ellie raised by two possums named Crash and Eddie, who could be a chance for Manny to start a family. During Scrat's first scene he runs out of limbs to stop the leaks so he uses his mouth, causing him to inflate and fly around before dropping thousands of feet. As Manny and Ellie prepare for their coming baby, Sid decides to adopt three eggs he finds, which hatch into baby Tyrannosaurus he names Egbert, Yoko and Shelly. The babies' mother, Momma appears and takes them and Sid away, so the rest of the pack travel to a hidden world populated by dinosaurs to save him. Along the way, they meet the crazy weasel Buck, who seeks revenge against a dinosaur called Rudy. Egbert, Yoko and Shelly, the baby Tyrannosaurus rexes eat a large chunk of meat their mother Momma brought. Crash, Eddie, and Buck go to rescue Sid from a river of lava, but they are chased by a flock of pterosaurs. Crash and Eddie use berries to shoot down the attacking pterosaurs, one of which gets it in the mouth. Ice Age: Collision Course is a computer animated film, and the fifth movie in the Ice Age series. If Scrat puts his mouth into a water geyser, he will fill up with water and fly away, allowing him to reach new places. This is a reference to the opening of the second movie.
