I knew I wanted to do a horror story for my first film, I love the genre, I thought: what can I do that is unique? I thought of that story, and the idea of the creature, the Pishach. The other piece of it was that I really wanted to do a film about assimilating into American culture as an Indian American teenager. I was struck by an early scene where Poorna admonishes Sam for whistling, claiming that it signals evil spirits.
