When I was young I was wonder struck to see the hand skills of my mother and grandmother to join the dots of white rice powder dry or wet paste on the floor of inside and outside entrance of the house and at prayer place in the house to create design patterns with sound reason and a purpose, lamp kolam with dots. This decorative hand art is done in temple premises too.

This gets tagged into my own sikku kolam collection. The dot pattern — 25 dots in the centre grid and decreased one dot on top and bottom int the adjacent columns till the dot reaches to 1. The first strand at the bottom is shown in the below image. The strand is a mirror image of the left hand side strand. Now copy the strands on all four sides, finally these form a single line.

Sometimes, Planning gets on a full swing while the execution hits the bottom rock on the list So it happened to my Margazhi planning as I had created 20 sikku kolams beforehand and execution was nowhere on my priority list. Time to restructure the list. The dot count for this kolam is 25 dots in the centre column decreased to 1 on either side. I have uploaded a dot pattern image below, you may download and practice the kolam. But it would be wise to place the dot by yourself as that would be a practice to place the dots in symmetry. The first strand runs throughout the edges of the kolam. Its very simple to draw. Just start from one corner of the kolam, ie from the bottom and keep drawing till it reaches to two loops, now move on to the other side and just draw the same lines looping around the dots.

Mostly sikku kolams do have a basic strand which forms the base design irrespective of the dot count. And one such among is the below design. There are many kolam designs with this as the base design though I have chose only four this time.
