LibriVox is a group of worldwide volunteers who read and record public domain texts, creating free public domain audiobooks for download from their website and other digital library hosting sites on the internet. It was founded in by Hugh McGuire to provide "Acoustical liberation of books in the public domain" [2] and the LibriVox objective is "To make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet". This means no one else can reproduce the text or make derivative works such as audio recordings while the copyright is in force. LibriVox records only texts that are in the public domain in the USA — see below for why , and all our recordings are public domain definitely in the USA, and maybe in your country as well, see below. This means anyone can use all our recordings however they wish even to sell them. In addition, book summaries, CD cover art, and any other material that goes into our catalog with the audio recordings are in the public domain. Under US law under which LibriVox operates , public domain includes all works published before A work published after is probably not in the public domain and we probably cannot record it. If a work is published before , then we can record it. Note also, that a translation is considered a new work, and its copyright status is determined by the year of publication of the translation , not the original work. Theoretically new works should come into the public domain every year this is what happens in other countries , however in the United States, a number of copyright laws have been passed extending the copyright term.
