For one year we will be traveling on a limited budget, which necessitates an entirely different approach. Firstly, we hope to take some time to relax, absorb other cultures, see some sights, and do some normal stuff besides hardcore birding - such as our laundry. Secondly, we just can't afford to jet off to every possible location in hopes of seeing as many species as possible - not that we won't try - so a side trip to New Caledonia in hopes of seeing a Kagu is unlikely. Thirdly, and in this respect it won't differ that much from our other trips , we're far from expert birders. As the taksi leaves the airport, we pass a crowd of Jackdaws and our first "Hooded Crows". From our hotel balcony ours for the first night only we see a very pale, bleached-out leaf warbler - apparently a Chiffchaff - hopping around in a fig? Unidentified Swifts swoop and chatter loudly in the dusk, and when night falls, fiery gulls fly above, illuminated by the nearby mosque's spotlights.
