HaeAhn shows me a huge half-healed rash running up her leg, the result of touching uncured ottchil lacquer with her bare hands. Ottchil lacquer is made with the sap of the lacquer tree, and contains the same chemical substance as poison ivy. Upon contact, the resulting dermatitis looks like a blistered and peeling scab, wet and dry—and itchy, the itchiest of itches. At the same time, itchiness tempts us to scratch and re-open the small hole into ourselves. The body is like a river, where injury and illness flow through its invisible streams, liquid inside and air outside. And in South Korea—where the works in the show were produced over three summer months—the fifth cardinal direction is inward. The first work one encountered was, appropriately, a sort of doorbell: a small brown plastic wall-plate with a funky cubic relief surface, a broken springed button and adorned with the iridescent wing-cover of a beetle, mistaken for a lost acrylic fingernail.

A bit more about Paul:. After that, I joined Riot Games, designing many iconic and fun characters for League of Legends for the past 10 years. I am a mostly self-taught artist. I really enjoy creating powerful and beautiful female characters. I often draw my own feelings and even draw and paint female character portraits for fun in my personal time! With Tomb Raider III, we knew the possibilities were endless given new styles added to Lara's wardrobe, including her iconic Area 51 outfit. Paul often plays with fashion and unique accessories in his designs, so we couldn't wait to see his take his take on Lara Croft via Tomb Raider III. For my reimagining of Lara, I revisited her outfit from Tomb Raider III and gave it a modernized twist to the design while still capturing the original essence. Yet, I wanted to depict her caught in the moment of stillness surrounded by digital fragments of artifacts amidst the holographic desert setting. The style of the background and the abbreviated title are heavily leaning towards the simple, technical and graphical designs to give that modernized look for the whole illustration.
