Marvel's main canon has not been very kind to Peter Quill and the other Guardians of the Galaxy. Not only did they lose their best friend Groot as he became a cosmic threat to the universe, but the team even ended up sacrificing themselves in an attempt to stop him with Star-Lord becoming a new version of Ego in the process. Now, somewhere in the multiverse, Star-Lord has officially lost his iconic title to the most unexpected hero. According to Comic Book Resources , the upcoming Howard the Duck 1 anthology will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the crude and comedic character with a variety of "What If" scenarios, including one where he becomes the newest leader of the Guardians. This story crafted by Merritt K and Will Robson will delve into the science fiction angle of Howard the Duck and give him a chance to prove himself as the ultimate galactic hero. It's actually not an out-there concept to pair him with the Guardians given he'd fit right at home with the outsiders on the team. What's most compelling about this preview is that Marvel's first glimpse into Howard's tenure as Star-Lord paints him as a surprisingly good leader. There's obviously no lettering yet given the book is still in progress, but the images say it all. Howard seems motivated and determined to save the galaxy based on his facial expressions, which is a stark juxtaposition from how readers have perceived the heavily comedic character over the past 50 years. What's even more telling, though, is that the team seems to be hanging on to his every word. The Guardians of the Galaxy have made a name for themselves in recent years for being a semi-dysfunctional found family that respects one another but still argues from time to time.
A few days later, Peter was back on Hala with his commando team.

A notorious human hero adventuring in outer space, he was first introduced in the James Gunn film "Guardians Of The Galaxy. Leader of an intergalactic band of rebel do-gooders, he's battled cosmic-level threats and villains bent on interstellar conquest. But the hero — whose real name is Peter Quill — came from humbler beginnings. Of course, from his earliest days getting into schoolyard brawls, to eventually fighting alongside Earth's mightiest heroes and stopping Thanos' plans of universal armageddon, Quill has always been a rebel with a cause. A mainstay of the MCU, we've charted his course all the way from his Celestial ancestry through to his latest exploits with the Guardians Of The Galaxy. If you're looking for a primer on Star-Lord's role in Marvel Cinematic Universe, strap in and sit tight, true believers, because we're here to explain it all. Some time in the late s before Peter Quill was even born, the being known as Ego — a member of the ancient Celestial race — took human form and visited planet Earth to enact a cosmic plan of grand design. There, he met and fell in love with a young woman named Meredith Quill, and the two shared their lives with each other.
