The lonely remains of Sherman tanks that fought in the Battle of Normandy The armored vestiges of the Cold War: a tanks graveyard in Germany. Following the German invasion of France in the spring of , the Third Reich began fortifying the coast of that country in anticipation of an Allied landing. This network of fortifications, known as the "Atlantic Wall", ran along the entire French coast from Spain to Belgium, and was the reason why the French were prohibited from approaching the beaches during the war. One of the important points of this defensive network was Pointe du Hoc, located in Normandy , which was one of the targets of the US Rangers during the landing on June 6, , since it was estimated that there was an important artillery position there that it would have jeopardized the landings on the beaches assigned to the Americans , named as Utah and Omaha in the invasion plan. However, when the Rangers reached Pointe du Hoc they did not find the cannons they expected. The Germans had moved the artillery pieces to the Maisy Battery, inland , and from there they were firing for several days both at the US landing forces and at the planes that ventured into the area, until the Rangers managed to take it on June 9. The most curious thing about this battery is that for decades it was completely forgotten and literally disappeared from the map: all its forts were buried by the US military.

Sometime in the German occupying force in Normandy began construction of a coastal gun battery near the inland village of Maisy about 7 km west of the now better known battery located on the Pointe du Hoc. The Maisy Battery was apparently not fully operable by June 6, It was bombed by the RAF and shelled by Allied war ships on D-Day, but not overrun by ground forces until the 8 th when a mixed force from the 1 st Battalion, th Infantry and 5 th Rangers fought through the area to clear enemy resistance as far west as the Vire River. Sterne maintains that Neptune intelligence was fooled completely by the ruse and that Ike considered the Pointe du Hoc battery, with its casemates shielding six mm cannon, the greatest potential threat to the American beaches right through D-Day. The planners responded to that threat by committing two battalions of elite U. The Rangers spiked the guns, cut the coastal road, and spent the next two days taking heavy casualties while fending off German counterattacks and waiting to be relieved. While searching for a locale to open a D-Day museum-attraction in , Sterne stumbled on the Maisy Battery, by that time almost obliterated from view and memory, eventually bought the property and excavated the parts of the site now open to the public. None of the large-gun-batteries strung out behind the landing beaches from St.

Books have been written, movies made and museums set up in their memory, but as I stand in a rough eld near the Calvados coast, I am acutely aware that here at Maisy Battery, a new story is only just beginning. Events here were inextricably linked to the assault on Pointe du Hoc by the 2nd US Ranger Battalion on June 6, , and yet Maisy barely warrants a paragraph in the history books. For more than 60 years, this vast German complex lay hidden beneath the soil until it was uncovered by British military historian Gary Sterne in Nowhere else can history fans and remembrance visitors experience the atmosphere of exploring trenches and underground buildings. International lm fans already know the story of Omaha Beach, the code name for an 8km stretch of wide-open sand between Vierville-sur-Mer and Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer — or they think they do. The movie The Longest Day showed how the 2nd Rangers scaled the sheer cliffs at Pointe du Hoc while suffering heavy casualties, only to find there were no guns there. And in Saving Private Ryan , released in , Stephen Spielberg pulled no punches in showing young soldiers mown down by German fire-power.
