It was replaced on 29 March , with what was then known as RuneScape 2. He created the platform solely based upon Java-dependent computing and 2D graphics. Later, several months after the initial development of DeviousMUD , an open beta was announced for those who wished to play the Java-based game straight from their computer. After much success, RuneScape Classic was open to everyone after the Gower brothers decided to maintain and build upon their already existent business. RuneScape Classic is no longer available to play after it's servers were taken offline by Jagex on 6 August

RuneScape takes place in the world of Gielinor, a medieval fantasy realm divided into different kingdoms, regions, and cities. The game's fictional universe has been explored through a tie-in video game on another of its maker's websites, FunOrb , Armies of Gielinor , [6] and the novels Betrayal at Falador , [7] Return to Canifis , [8] and Legacy of Blood. Players are represented in the game with customisable avatars. RuneScape does not follow a linear storyline; rather, players set their own goals and objectives. Players can choose to fight non-player character NPC monsters, complete quests , or increase their experience in the available skills. Players interact with each other through trading, chatting, or by participating in mini-games and activities, some of which are competitive or combative in nature, while others require cooperative or collaborative play. The first public version of RuneScape was released in January in beta form, with Jagex as its copyright holder being formed later that year. As the game's popularity grew, the game engine was rewritten and released as RuneScape 2 , [10] with the original version of the game being renamed RuneScape Classic. The third iteration of the game, known as RuneScape 3 , was released in July It was announced that mobile ports of both versions of RuneScape would be released for Android and iOS devices in Players begin in a secluded area called Tutorial Island, where they are taken through a tutorial , a set path where they learn the most basic skills in RuneScape. RuneScape Classic: Farewell 23 May For many years we've left all of the content from the original game available to play. Whilst it's seemingly been happily plodding along since then, it is with great sadness that we have taken the difficult decision to say goodbye to RuneScape Classic, which we will be winding down over the next 3 months.
