This is a lush, humid environment displaying the full spectrum of green across palm fronds and sphagnum moss, shoelace ferns, oak leaves, and thousands of other plants.
The conservation area is huge, so exploring it will take at least few trips. I have encountered water at different times, so take that into consideration when you prepare for your visit. Most of the area is located on the west side of Hatbill Road, but there are some interesting sections on the east side of the road. During my expeditions I have entered the area from three different locations. Each area was quite different from the other. In no case were there any blazed trails, just old dirt roads and game trails to follow. This area, 20 miles east of Orlando and ten miles west of Titusville, is bounded on the east by the St. Johns River and on the south by SR The area is a mosaic of open pastures, river marsh, hardwood, and cabbage palm hammocks. A diversity of migratory and resident wading birds and waterfowl are frequently found here, and occasionally, roseate spoonbills , white pelicans , bald eagles and sandhill cranes are present. Migratory songbirds in season, painted buntings and turkeys are present in the hammocks. Recreational activities include hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, hiking, primitive camping, paddling, boating, bicycling and picnicking. On the area are 4. White-tailed deer, turkey, and small game hunting are good on this area. Camping is permitted only at the designated through-trail campsites along the Florida Trail for hikers accessing the area by means of the Florida National Scenic Trail.

The property helps to filter nutrients during seasonal flooding; 96 percent of the area is part of the St. Johns River floodplain. One of the special highlights of this property is that its unique plant community that is supported by naturally salty water, which flows from small springs near Harney and Puzzle lakes.
