Colleagues of a Melbourne father who died from COVID last month after his workplace became an exposure site, believe his death could have been avoided if the organisation took the virus, and the safety of its employees, more seriously. WorkSafe has confirmed it is looking into the death of Martin Blight, 46, after concerns were raised about unsafe practices at the Serco call centre at Mill Park in Melbourne's north. One Serco employee — who was working during the outbreak last month and wanted to remain anonymous — told the ABC the company did not take COVID prevention seriously. She said Mr Blight, who was a long-term Serco employee, had raised concerns about people eating at their desks and taking their masks off around him. She said that, if the company had isolated staff when it first became aware of the positive case, Mr Blight might not have caught the virus. The Australian Services Union had repeatedly warned the company about unsafe practices at work since the pandemic began, including a lack of social distancing and poor hygiene practices. A spokesperson for Serco said the company was aware of the WorkSafe investigation into its Mill Park site.

The junking of the contract with apparently little or no provision for sacked staff to transfer into other roles is a headache for both minister for government services Bill Shorten and finance minister Katy Gallagher as the Albanese government prosecutes its stated agenda of reducing outsourcing in the public service. Also in the mix is a good old-fashioned union turf war for members, with a reduction of reliance on outsourcers by the government necessarily shifting employees back into direct government employment, and thus different union coverage, with the main beneficiary being the Community and Public Sector Union. With call centre staff generally in short supply across both the public and private sectors, one of the issues for Services Australia is that those staff leaving Serco may simply go to another agency, jurisdiction or sector. Never uncontroversial, the Serco contract with Services Australia was first inked in and was bitterly opposed by the Community and Public Sector Union, which blasted it as a way to cut wages for work public servants should be doing. The contract came after multiple excoriating reports and audits roasted Centrelink for botching its call centre volumes and creating huge wait times and the plain inability to even get through to a person. The demand goes up as more people call, with our population up by 6 per cent or 1. The Serco deal was supposed to restore some of that capacity, but it also created a mechanism for the Abbott government to try and dilute levels of industrialisation inside Human Services by sending work to outsourcers.
