The true story of Jeff Bauman, who lost both of his legs in the bombing, is told with detail and care in a film that works hard at avoiding cliche. The events of the latter film also act as a backdrop for this striking new drama from director David Gordon Green. In Stronger, the Boston marathon bombing itself is not the primary focus but more of a starting point for the journey of a man caught in the middle of the tragedy and struggling with the road to recovery. But tragedy strikes and a terrorist attack leaves Jeff in the hospital, both of his legs amputated. An uncertain road lies ahead for Jeff and Erin with instant celebrity, pain and rehabilitation threatening to either tear them apart or pull them closer together. During the majority of Stronger, I was struck with the feeling that a far more generic, far less humane version of this story could have so easily been made instead. But Green proves to be a fine choice as director, an unusual career flitting between lo-fi indie fare like George Washington and Undertow and stoner James Franco comedies like Pineapple Express and Your Highness somehow making him the perfect fit for the material. Everything else is a blur and the focus remains on them.

It follows Bauman, who loses his legs in the Boston Marathon bombings and must adjust to his new life. Stronger had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, , and was theatrically released in the United States on September 22, Jeff Bauman is a well-intentioned but underachieving Boston native who works at the deli counter of a Costco and lives in a small two-bedroom apartment with his alcoholic mother Patty. One day at the local bar, Jeff runs into his ex-girlfriend Erin, who is attracted to his kindness and charm, but finds herself constantly frustrated by his lack of commitment. After learning that Erin is running in the Boston Marathon to raise money for the hospital she works at, Jeff asks every patron in the bar to donate and then promises Erin he'll wait at the finish line for her with a big sign. The day of the Marathon, Jeff scrambles to make it to the finish line on time, but reaches it before Erin does. As she approaches the finish line, a bomb goes off right where Jeff is standing. After being rushed to a hospital, both of Jeff's legs are amputated above the knee. When he regains consciousness, Jeff tells his brother that he saw the bomber before the explosion.

Some of it is too broad, and I wish the film dug a little deeper at times, but this is one of those rare inspirational films that earns its inspiration. We meet Jeff Jake Gyllenhaal , getting out of a sticky situation at his job at Costco so he can be in his lucky chair to watch the Red Sox game. In what feels like an effort to try and win her back a bit, Jeff makes a sign to greet her at the finish line.
