These characters were originally based on the Mighty Crusaders [1] and then reworked in an unsolicited proposal to fit superhero properties DC had acquired from Charlton Comics in the early s. Since the publisher planned to integrate Charlton's superheroes into the main DC Universe and the script would have made many of them unusable for future stories, series writer Alan Moore eventually agreed to create original characters. Moore wished the main characters to present six "radically opposing ways" to perceive the world, and to give readers of the story the privilege of determining which one was most morally comprehensible. The protagonists of Watchmen were reused in the prequel series Before Watchmen , which also gave backstories to several minor characters from the original graphic novel, and introduced new characters. Later on, several Watchmen characters reappeared in the limited series Doomsday Clock , bringing them into the main DC Universe.

Edward "Eddie" Blake , the violent, anarchistic vigilante known as the Comedian , had the longest crime-fighting career out of all the costumed vigilantes in his world. He fought as a hero in the Vietnam War , was a member of the Minutemen and the Crimebusters , and acted as both a hero and a villain before being killed by Ozymandias and Doctor Manhattan in Little is known about Eddie Blake's early life. He was born in , and it was speculated that he had abusive parents. At just sixteen years old, he adopted a yellow and purple costume, and began running savagely beating criminals, and sometimes their victims, using the moniker of the Comedian. He was part of a group called the Minutemen , a team of eight masked crime-fighting vigilantes. He caused a fight with Hooded Justice , who proceeded to beat Blake in a rage. The Minutemen banned him from the group, though not before Blake held Hooded Justice at gunpoint and threatened to kill him and anyone else if they ever touched him again. After being stabbed in the chest in , he changed his green and purple costume to tough leather armor. Soon after the Minutemen disbanded in the s, Blake was called to testify for the disappearance and killing of Hooded Justice, but he refused to testify. Nothing was ever proved against him. In the late '60s, Blake joined a group called the Crimebusters , led by Captain Metropolis. However, their first meeting did not last long after the Comedian set fire to one of Metropolis's display and told everybody that the group was a joke.

The story of Watchmen starts with the aftermath of Edward Blake's murder in Fellow crimefighter Rorschach , independently investigating the murder, discovers that Blake was in fact the Comedian. The main plot of Watchmen initially involves Rorschach's suspicion of a plot to kill costumed heroes "masks" ; his continuing investigation into Blake's murder leads to a much larger, more horrifying secret. The Comedian's appearances in Watchmen consist of flashbacks of the other characters.

The Comedian's Badge , also known as The Button , is a yellow smiley face pin, worn by Eddie Blake , typically shown with a streak of blood splashed across from the upper right side. In his early days as a member of the Minutemen , Eddie Blake wore a different symbol attached to his belt buckle: a purple-red grinning face resembling a comedy mask from ancient Greek theatre. By the time Nelson Gardner attempted to recruit Blake into his new organization, the Crimebusters , Blake was wearing a new uniform without any sort of badge. The more familiar smiley badge became a part of the Comedian's uniform at least prior to , when he wore it at the VVN Day celebrations that marked the end of the Vietnam War. He wore it consistently from that time until On October 11th, , Blake was wearing the badge on his night robe when he was attacked in his apartment. When Blake was beaten about the face, blood from his nose and mouth stained the badge in its familiar pattern: a single line of blood across the badge's right eye.
