Though Konica Minolta this year pulled out of cameras altogether, the collaboration continued with Sony taking over the Alpha name a name used exclusively in Japan and the lens and accessory lineup. The new camera holds a lot more promise than its predecessor, but brings with it the benefit of the established Alpha system. We had the opportunity to look at a pre-release version of the camera, and ran it through some preliminary tests. We have a user report and our usual thorough coverage of design and function, as well as timing and detail down to the menus. At first it was a little odd seeing the Sony logo across the front of a camera I immediately perceived as a Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D. Imatest's second chart translates the results into a two-dimensional chart. Each small square shows the location on the chart that matches the ideal rendition of a color patch. Each square is linked by a line to a circle, which shows where the A's rendition sits on the chart. A perfect camera would show only circles, because the ideal and the real would be perfectly aligned, and the camera's circles would cover up the ideal colors' squares. To the extent that there is distance between a circle and a square, the camera's color is wrong.

Sony 's first digital SLR looks like one of the most exciting and innovative newcomers to arrive on the scene for some time. With ten-million pixels, built-in anti-shake and 20 new lenses on the way, Sony has hit the ground running. Behind the scenes, though, there's another story which puts everything into context. But then in January Konica Minolta made the shock announcement that it was withdrawing from the digital camera market altogether and that Sony would take over its SLR business. At the time, Konica Minolta was making the likeable and rather interesting 6Mp Dynax 5D digital SLR, and it was disappointing to think it might disappear. Well it hasn't, not exactly. Let's put it this way.
